About

The feeling of obscurity when kneeling in front of a new canvas – is the same as when learning to play a new piece of music: will it obey my hands?

The knowledge acquired in the Music Academy finds its place in paintings, demanding rhythm, dynamics, polyphony, and a conversation between musical themes. Cloth dyeing is like joyous magic I feel as marble patterns emerge from the darkness. It’s like a promise of a rainbow after every rain.

About thirty years ago Jurate invented a method of fabric dyeing for creating specific images and outlines. At that time it was difficult to get information from behind the Iron Curtain, so all of the textile dyeing was called batik. Now we can see that Jurate’s method is more similar to shibori, tie-dye or plangi. The principle is the same – preventing paint from entering certain areas of fabric.

Artworks are created using raw cotton and cotton threads. The cloth is sewn, knotted, bent, laced, tied tightly, and soaked in hot paint. Later the dyed fabric is untied and unfolded while constantly rinsing in cold water.
