The Missing Prussians
The cycle
The artwork cycle The Missing Prussians was created based on knowledge from historical writings. The unexpected and strange fate of Prussian lands has long weighed on my mind. For some, it is a state that has vanished from maps; for others, an ancient Baltic tribe; and for yet others, echoes of a language that has faded away. But for everyone, it represents something lost, irretrievably sunk into the past.
To me, Prussia is the reflection of a blue sky and rich earth in the lagoon waters. And the people — what were they like? No one knows, for they are the lost Prussians.
At the same crossroads of the world where the Prussians once lived, Kristijonas Donelaitis was born three centuries ago — a man who did not conform to the ways of the world, a personality endowed with many talents. These artworks, created to commemorate this significant anniversary, feel like a continuation of the ancient Prussian stories. The land of Lithuania Minor still holds many hidden stories, waiting for their turn to be revealed.
